So You Want to do a Triathlon

Local Pro Triathlete, Laura Mathews, will be sharing tips from choosing your first race to crossing the finish line and a lot of the in between training information. Laura has raced competitively as a pro athlete since 2017 traveling the globe to bike, swim, and run. She will dive into her wealth of knowledge and training experience to help make 2025 your year to cross the finish line. No matter the length of race there is something for you to learn from her.

Laura grew up in Memphis, TN. She started summer league swimming at 8 and year round swimming at 12. Laura swam on the Memphis Tigers team through high school. She swam at Duquesne university her first year of college. After the season was over, the amount of practice was drastically reduced. She started biking and running to stay in shape for the summer long course swim season at home and signed up for the Memphis in May sprint triathlon to stay motivated to practice on her own. At Memphis in May she placed 3rd and qualified for nationals. She transferred to Rice university and ran on the track and cross country team for one year before deciding to focus on triathlon. She won 4 age group national titles and was 2nd at the age group world championships. She turned pro her last semester of college in 2017. Laura has raced all over the world as a professional. She qualified for the 70.3 world championship twice. Some of her favorite races were 70.3 Pucon, 70.3 Lahti (Finland), 70.3 Les Sables (France), and the 2018 World Championship in Port Elizabeth South Africa. She focuses on both draft legal and 70.3s. She has raced 35 70.3s and countless sprint and Olympic distance races.

Laura is at UGA working on a PhD in statistics.
