Head Honcho Speaks: April 2023

Hello Everyone,

It is April here in our great town of Athens, GA. What does that mean? Twilight and everything bicycles the whole month.

This is a great time of year to be a cyclist. Not only do we get more recognition around town, but we also get a chance to speak out about cycling. While cycling is on everyone’s mind this month I have a favor to ask of all of you. Take the time and reach out to our Mayor and commission to tell them how much you love cycling and how we need safer bike corridors to access more of our wonderful city! Find your commissioner here and send them an email.  There are so many great places in town to reach by bike we just need the roads to be safer. The League of American Bicyclists recently posted that we have had the highest number of bicycle rider fatalities in the US since 1975.  In 2021 there were 966. Find that article here.

We have a lot of great things happening this spring in the Classic City. One of them is the opening of the new Firefly Bridge. We encourage all of you to come out this Friday April 20th at 3:30pm. Detailed event information found here.  The Mayor and Commissioners need to see our faces at these events! This bridge brings us closer to being able to access Winterville by bike! Ride from downtown Athens to Winterville for brunch on the weekend, or catch some live music at The Front Porch Bookstore on Main St. Check out their concert series listed on Facebook here.

The Gambler ride is a town favorite bike ride for many people every year. We get a number of people each year bringing their bikes out of storage just to have it ready to ride in the Gambler. Show up and do the ride with friends it is a good time.

We will have our own Flicker-Vitus Racing p/b The Hub Bicycles race team racing in the Twilight race this year so come on down and cheer them on. Check out the team so you know who to root for!

As always thank you all for your business. We love all of you so much and only want the best for our community. Without you we would not get to do what we love every day!
